I've geeked out and worked out how to do it, and now wish to show the world.
I looked on lots of sites as to how to do it and they all cost money or were limited in their usage, but this is a free and functional web based solution that works.

Follow the instructions (apart from instruction no.6 as that's irrelevant and works fine without it).
Download all your text messages as a pdf or html or excel document.
